Back to reality....

Well I thought I'd best come back on here and post an update since this is my first week back on placement number two. I was really looking forward to getting back to placement although as I think I mentioned in my last post I was a little nervous as my first week I am on the rota for theatre.

So anyway, yesterday was the first day back in the department in quite some time so to say I felt a little rusty was an understatement. As I was on theatre I was only in the department for about half an hour before we were needed so off we went. It was my first time going down to theatre with a radiographer so quite a new experience and unfortunately it did not go so well as I ended up passing out which was slightly embarrassing!! I don't feel quite as bad about it now as I did yesterday as the clinical tutor (who looks after the student radiographers) has been really supportive and some of the radiographers and other staff have also really gone out of their way to help me which is great.

Today I went back into theatre with the aim of just getting used to the environment so as far as I'm aware it was slightly different in that it wasn't orthopaedic or traumatic etc so I didn't need to wear the usual restrictive kit that you normally do and there wasn't anything to see that might make me feel unwell which really helped. I even went back in the afternoon with a radiographer for a quick procedure and even got involved a little bit and managed with one of the lead gowns. Fair enough it was only a very short procedure and again there wasn't really anything for me to see that might make me start to feel funny but I felt like I'd made a bit of progress today, even if it was just a little bit.

There wasn't an awful lot of opportunity to take x-rays today with me being in theatre and then going straight into a tutorial which we have every week. At the moment the department is quite busy with a lot of students so it was a case of taking it in turns when a request card came in with something that we could do. So I managed to do a few and although I felt rusty and couldn't remember it all I found I remembered more than I initially thought I did and managed to attempt some projections which I hadn't had a chance to or didn't feel confident enough to try during the last placement. When there is a bit of a lull I like to try and practise positioning techniques with other students so that if a request card does come in and it's something I haven't tried yet with a patient I feel more confident and that was the case yesterday.

I do enjoy placement and get a lot out of it but it doesn't half wear me out. Think I will have an early night so I'm ready for tomorrow. I'd best leave it there for now as there isn't really anything else to report at the moment. Again, if anyone is reading and wants to find out about anything in particular feel free to comment and I'll do my best to help.
